Neural Mobilization for Pain Disorders
DESCRIPTION
Neural mobilization is a treatment approach that has gained popularity because it is effective and easy to implement. This treatment approach can be performed in a passive manner where a therapist guides the client through a movement pattern, and it can also be carried out as part of a self-care program that people perform on their own.

Neural mobilization is a treatment approach that has gained popularity because it is effective and easy to implement. This treatment approach can be performed in a passive manner where a therapist guides the client through a movement pattern, and it can also be carried out as part of a self-care program that people perform on their own.

The goal of neural mobilization is to restore homeostasis in and around the nervous system, by mobilization of the nervous system itself or the structures that surround the nervous system. Existing research shows that neural mobilization can be particularly useful for the management of carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, sciatica, and plantar heel pain.

For a deeper appreciation of neural mobilization, it helps to look at the technique from a historical perspective.
Neural Mobilization for Pain DisordersA dysregulated neuro-immune response may contribute to chronic pain conditions and clinical phenomena often attributed to trigger points (taut band, hypersensitive spot, and referred pain) or nerve entrapments (hyperalgesia and allodynia). The nociceptive system (distributed across the peripheral and central nervous systems) plays an important role in protecting the body from potential threats by integrating interoceptive and exteroceptive cues.
